San Luis Rey Mission

San Luis Rey Mission Illustration

San Luis Rey Mission Church, was founded on June 13, 1798, by Father Fermín Francisco de Lasuén, a Franciscan. It was built by the Quechnajuichom Native American tribe. The original name, La Misión de San Luis, Rey de Francia was named for King Louis IX of France. It is known as “King of the Missions.” It is the eighteenth of the twenty-one Spanish missions in California, and one of the largest. The current church, built in 1811, is the third church on this location. It is a National Historic Landmark.

Our replica may be seen in the San Luis Rey Mission rose garden in Oceanside, California.

The brands used in this design were created by a blacksmith.
